Hero Paisley Postmistress Foils 3K Scam On Paisley Pensioner

A Paisley Postmistress has foiled yet another scam this time involving £3,000.

The scam involved the customer ( whose bank had already given them the £3,000 !! ) posting the money to the scammers after they claimed to be from her bank and told her there was “unusual activity on her account”. They asked her to withdraw all her savings and post it to an address, so that they can “deposit into a new account”.

A spokesperson at Paisley’s Premier Westend Store stated ” When the customer came into the Post Office today, she was visibly shook. As the customer was known to us, Najma thought that it was out of character and asked what was in the package. The customer hesitated and told her it was money at the sum of £3000. She had managed to successfully withdraw this amount from her bank earlier.

Najma immediately told her that this was likely to be a scam and told her to contact her own bank. While she did this the scammers kept calling back, this time however, Najma answered and they hung up.

The bank confirmed that no such call had or would ever have been made demanding money.

Could we please stress the importance of letting elderly/loved ones know about this on a regular, as this is sadly becoming more common.”

It was in February 2022 that the same Postmistress foiled a similar scam for £1,500, saving a vulnerable elderly pensioner from sending £1500 via Moneygram to India. The scammers had gained access to her PC and even had access to her Web cam, threatening to wipe her PC and back account if she didn’t send money via the Post Office.
