In a heartwarming tribute to William McNally, the Linwood community continues to honor the memory of the teenager who tragically passed away on June 5, 2001, after encountering difficulties while swimming in the River Gryffe. His family, determined to transform their grief into positive action, has been tirelessly fundraising to support the many people and organizations that provided help in their time of need.
This past weekend, William’s mother, Sharron Drennan, demonstrated incredible bravery by participating in a 160-foot sponsored bungee jump in Glasgow. This daring feat was part of her efforts to raise funds for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. This organization supports the Royal Hospital for Children, the institution that valiantly tried to save William and offered unwavering support to his family during the organ donation process.

Sharron’s commitment has already garnered significant support, with her bungee jump helping to add to the impressive £1,780. This total was bolstered by the efforts of Linwood High School, which last week hosted a “Wear Something Blue to School Day” in memory of William’s love for all things Scotland. The school’s initiative added another £550 to the fundraising pot.
In addition to supporting the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, a portion of the funds raised will be donated to the Glasgow Humane Society. This organization has worked closely with William’s family to install water safety equipment along the River Gryffe and other waterways, ensuring greater safety for the community and helping to prevent future tragedies.

In a poignant new tradition, the Tweedie Hall in Linwood will be illuminated in blue for the first time this year on July 25th to mark World Drowning Day. This gesture not only honors William’s memory but also raises awareness about water safety.
The combined efforts of Sharron Drennan, Linwood High School, and the wider Linwood community are a testament to the enduring impact of William McNally’s life. Through their dedication and generosity, they continue to turn a personal tragedy into a beacon of hope and safety for others.

Stay tuned for updates on the ongoing fundraising efforts and how you can contribute to these meaningful causes. Together, we can ensure that William’s legacy lives on, making our world a safer place for everyone.
