A significant fire broke out at number 30 Well Street in Paisley in the early hours of this morning. The blaze, reported shortly after 1 am, has led to the ongoing closure of the lower half of Well Street, causing considerable disruption in the area.The area is due for Demolition this Autumn and the affected properties were empty and no persons were injured.

The fire was successfully extinguished shortly before 11am, thanks to the swift response of Scottish Fire and Rescue. Despite their efforts, the structural damage to the building was severe, necessitating immediate safety measures of an onsite survey.At the peak of the blaze, six appliances, including a high reach were dispatched to the incident, A spokesperson for the SFRS said: “At around 12.47am on Saturday June 29, we received a call reporting a dwelling fire in the top floor of a tenement building on Well Street in Paisley.The fire was fully extinguished and the last appliance left the incident at 10.54am.

As of midday, demolition contractors from Reigart have been on the scene. Their primary task has been making the building safe, which has included the removal of sandstone lintels and uprights from the top windows. This careful and urgent work is essential to ensure the stability of the remaining structure and the safety of the surrounding area to pedestrians when the area is reopened.

Due to the road closure, a diversion has been implemented. Traffic is being redirected via Underwood Lane, Sutherland Street, and Brown Street. Commuters are advised to follow these routes to avoid the affected area.

Local authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise caution and patience as the remedial demolition work continues. The closure is expected to remain in place until the site is deemed safe.
