This morning in Paisley, quick-thinking construction workers may have averted a larger disaster after spotting a man attempting to set a vehicle on fire just after 8am in the town’s George Street. The workers, employed by a local construction firm, were the first to alert the police after witnessing the alarming scene unfold.

According to eyewitnesses reports, the suspect was seen coming out of a close in George Street then lighting a petrol can behind a vehicle on George Street. Thanks to the swift action of the construction workers, police were able to respond to the scene promptly. However, the situation escalated as the individual moved to another car in a nearby street off George Street, before heading into Causeyside Street. There, the suspect ignited the remaining petrol canister outside of Andy’s Chippy on Causeyside Street. suspicious packages were also left in closes at George Street prompting Scottish fire and rescue to turn off gas supplies and evacuate buildings as a matter of safety. Residents were taken into the university of the West of Scotland where shelter was offered.

The police quickly cordoned off George Street, Wardrobe Street, and other surrounding areas in Paisley to ensure public safety as investigations continue. It has been confirmed that a 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incidents. He would be expected to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court tomorrow morning.
