In a dramatic turn of events, the campaign to save Paisley’s TA Building has gained new urgency following recent unauthorised actions by the building’s owners. The community is rallying to protect one of the town’s architectural treasures.
The TA Building, designed by Paisley’s renowned architect TG Abercrombie in 1896-7, stands proudly on High Street as a testament to Paisley’s rich architectural history. It’s one of the finest examples among Abercrombie’s 38 listed buildings and serves as an integral part of the town’s beloved streetscape. Positioned between the iconic Paisley Museum and Coats Memorial Church, this historic structure has long been cherished by locals and visitors alike.
However, in October 2024, the TA Building faced a sudden threat. Without permission, its owners, the JR Group, began partially demolishing the structure and removed vital scaffolding that had been supporting the remaining walls since a 2020 fire. Just days later, they filed a request to demolish the building entirely, citing “urgent health and safety concerns.”
Despite these claims, structural assessments suggest that the TA Building remains stable. Even if some masonry were to fall, it poses no threat to the public as the walls sit well within the site’s boundaries. Concerned citizens and preservation advocates argue that demolition is unnecessary and that the building could still be restored.

A Building Worth Fighting For
The TA Building holds more than historical value. It’s a key piece of Paisley’s revival story. Major investments in the town hall, museum, arts centre, and central library are bringing a renewed sense of pride and optimism to Paisley. Losing this iconic structure would risk dampening the community’s confidence just as it is on the rise.
There’s hope, too, for a sustainable future for the building. With a large, flat site behind the structure, there’s potential for a development project that could benefit both the town and the building’s owners. Previous proposals, like the 2007 plan to convert the site into 26 flats, demonstrate the site’s potential to contribute positively to Paisley’s growth.
Council Takes Action
In response to the unauthorized demolition work, Renfrewshire Council issued two formal notices to the owners on October 14th. The first, a Temporary Stop Notice, demands an immediate halt to all site work and requires the reinstatement of the scaffolding within 28 days. The second notice, under the Building (Scotland) Act 2003, requires the owners to either comply with the existing building warrant, which mandates scaffolding, or appeal the notice by November 30th.
These actions signal the Council’s commitment to preserving the TA Building for future generations, ensuring that any structural changes align with heritage preservation standards.
Why Save the TA Building?
Paisley has become increasingly attractive to those seeking affordable housing outside Glasgow, thanks to its appealing environment, rich history, and excellent connectivity, with Gilmour Street station ranking as the third busiest in Scotland. Preserving historic sites like the TA Building strengthens Paisley’s appeal, making it a desirable place to live and work.
With the 2025 reopening of the newly renovated Paisley Museum on the horizon, there’s no better time to rally for the TA Building’s preservation. By standing together, the people of Paisley can protect this piece of their shared heritage and continue the town’s story of renewal and resilience.
If you believe in preserving Paisley’s history, now is the time to get involved. Join the petition, spread the word, and support efforts to save the TA Building—a beloved symbol of Paisley’s past and an essential part of its future.
