New Tennant For The Former Argos Store In Paisley Announced

Big changes are afoot for The Art Department in Paisley as it prepares to move from its current location in the former Co-op at the Paisley Centre to a brand-new home at 9-11 Causeyside Street. This transition marks an exciting new chapter for the beloved local gallery and creative hub.

A New Space with Historic Roots

The new location, originally built as MacArthur’s Outfitters in 1931, will be fully refurbished thanks to support from Renfrewshire Council’s Sustainable Communities Fund, funded via the UK Levelling Up Fund. The refurbishment will transform the historic building into a vibrant gallery space, complete with workshop areas, artists’ studios, and an art shop. This move coincides with the gallery’s rebranding as The Art Department, Paisley Ltd.

Transition Timeline

The Art Department will continue to welcome visitors at its current location until January 31. The doors to its new home at Causeyside Street will officially open on February 1, ushering in a fresh era for Paisley’s art scene.

Enhanced Workshop Programmes

The new facility will feature a dedicated creative learning workshop space on its first floor, capable of accommodating up to 30 participants. This space will include a lounge area and coffee station to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for learning and creativity.

A talented roster of professional artists will lead the workshops, with returning names like Eoghann MacColl (mixed media), Iona Kewney (drawing), and Ann Vance (painting). Classes will run on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 12 pm to 3 pm, while kids’ art classes will take place every Saturday from 10 am to 12 noon.

A Packed Exhibition Calendar for 2025

As part of its ongoing commitment to showcasing local talent, The Art Department has unveiled an exciting exhibition programme for 2025:

  • ACCORD Annual Art Exhibition: Running from April 15 to May 31, this event is held in partnership with ACCORD Hospice. The call for entries is open until February 28, inviting artists to contribute to this meaningful initiative.
  • The Big Art Show: Returning for its fourth annual edition, this dynamic showcase will take place from August 15 to October 31. Artists interested in participating can submit their entries starting February 15.

What This Means for Paisley

The relocation of The Art Department to Causeyside Street signals a renewed investment in Paisley’s cultural landscape. By creating a space where artists and the community can come together, the gallery continues to foster creativity, learning, and collaboration. With its enhanced facilities and ambitious programming, The Art Department is set to be a cornerstone of Paisley’s artistic future.
