Our Best Wishes Go to Demolition Workers Injured at Clune Park Demolition Site

We’re sending our heartfelt thoughts and best wishes to two demolition workers who were injured this afternoon at the Clune Park site in Port Glasgow.

The incident happened at the Montgomerie Street end of the estate, where contractors have recently begun work to tear down the former school and church buildings. Just days into the project, falling masonry struck two employees, prompting an emergency response. Both men were taken to hospital, and thankfully, early indications suggest their injuries have been minor with both being released.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed this afternoon:

“Around 3pm on Friday, May 2, police received a report two male employees were injured due to falling masonry at a demolition site in Montgomerie Street, Port Glasgow. The men have been taken to hospital. The matter has been referred to the Health and Safety Executive.”

Photos from the site showed a damaged telescopic handler, and work has since been paused as investigations get underway.

The demolition, carried out by Greenock-based contractors Caskie Ltd on behalf of Inverclyde Council, had only recently started. Having documented many of Caskie’s demolition projects over the years, I’ve seen first-hand the seriousness with which they approach health and safety. While this incident is no doubt a setback, I’m confident that the company will reflect deeply on what happened and apply any lessons learned. Caskie has always felt like a close-knit team, and I know this will be taken to heart by the whole Caskie family.

Above all, we hope for a speedy recovery for the two workers and that they’re back on their feet soon.
