Man Charged After Crucifix Set Alight and Gravestones Damaged at St Conval’s Cemetery

A man has been arrested and charged following a shocking incident of vandalism at St Conval’s Cemetery in Hurlet, Barrhead, which left around 40 graves damaged and a large wooden crucifix destroyed by fire.

The attack happened in the early hours of Sunday morning at the Glasgow Road burial ground, prompting a police investigation and an outpouring of concern from the local community and faith groups.

The Diocese of Paisley confirmed the extent of the damage in a statement, saying: “Those responsible attacked around 40 headstones, with some being demolished.” A five-metre-tall wooden crucifix was also deliberately set on fire.

Photographs from the scene show the charred remains of the cross and several headstones pushed over or shattered—images that have caused shock and distress among families with loved ones buried at the site.

Police Scotland have since confirmed that a 39-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with wilful fire-raising and vandalism. He is expected to appear in court at a later date.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We understand the distress and upset incidents like this cause to our communities, particularly to those with loved ones laid to rest in the cemetery. Our officers carried out extensive inquiries, and a man has now been arrested and charged.”

Many are calling for increased security at the cemetery to prevent future incidents and protect what is, for many, a sacred and deeply personal space.
