Glen Cinema Disaster Memorial Declared Structurally Unsafe

In preparation for the upcoming anniversary of the Glen Cinema Disaster, Renfrewshire Council had planned to carry out a clean-up of the memorial at Hawkhead Cemetery in Paisley. However, during the process an architect was asked to survey the monument, and their findings have revealed serious structural concerns.

The inspection highlighted major issues with the stonework, including deteriorating pointing and significant water damage. Sadly, this means the memorial is now considered unsafe.

From today, a safety cordon will be placed around the site, and the road beside the monument will be closed to protect the public. The precaution has been taken because of the risk of collapse if the structure were to deteriorate further.

The Glen Cinema Disaster remains one of the darkest chapters in Paisley’s history, and the memorial has long stood as a place of remembrance for those lost. Renfrewshire Council has not yet announced what the next steps will be for the monument’s restoration, but safety will remain the immediate priority.
