Local residents are being urged to stay alert after reports of increased rat activity in the Well Street area, as the first phase of house demolitions gets underway.
Neighbours have spoken of seeing more rodents scurrying through the streets in recent weeks, sparking concerns that the demolition work is disturbing established nests and driving the pests out into the open.
Environmental health officers have long warned that large demolition projects can unsettle vermin populations, pushing them into nearby gardens, closes, and even homes in search of food and shelter.
Residents are being advised to:
- Secure bin bags and make sure waste is stored in proper containers.
- Avoid leaving food outside, including bird seed or pet food.
- Report sightings of rats to Renfrewshire Council’s pest control team.
- Check entry points around homes, such as gaps in walls, pipes, or under doors.
While the increase is concerning, council teams and contractors are expected to monitor the situation and carry out pest control measures alongside the demolition programme.
Anyone worried about a potential infestation is encouraged to act quickly, as rats can spread disease and cause damage to property.
