Fire crews tackle blaze at Viridor waste facility in Linwood

Fire crews were called to the scene of a large fire on Wednesday morning at the Viridor reception shed on Middleton Road, Linwood.

The shed is used by the local authority as a temporary waste reception point, where refuse is dumped before being sorted and baled. The processed waste is then loaded onto lorries for transport to landfill or recycling centres.

At the height of the incident, six fire appliances and specialist resources were in attendance as crews worked to bring the blaze under control.

Due to heavy smoke in the area, members of the public were advised to avoid the vicinity and to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution.

Because of the location of the reception shed, Renfrewshire Council’s nearby recycling centre was forced to close and will remain shut until further notice.
