End of an Era: Harvies Tobacconists Closed Today After 100 Years

Harvies Tobacconists, a fixture on Paisley’s Moss Street for almost a century, closed its doors for the final time this afternoon.

The much-loved independent shop had previously announced plans to shut earlier this month, but it was confirmed that trading officially came to an end today, Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 4pm — bringing nearly 100 years of service to the town to a close.

Established around a century ago by James Harvie, the tobacconist later passed into the hands of John Macfarlane, who took over the business after previously running a bakery in the area.

His son, Bob Macfarlane, now 72, became involved in the shop while working elsewhere, before taking the helm in 1985 and eventually running the business full-time for the past 30 years.

“My dad previously owned a bakery in the area before buying this shop,” Mr Macfarlane said. “He probably never thought the tobacconist would outlive the bakery, but here we are.

“While I worked elsewhere, my dad ran the store for around 18 years. Originally, I was only meant to be working here in between jobs, but it became a passion.”

Harvies built a loyal customer base over the decades, specialising in cigars, pipes, lighters and smoking accessories, and becoming a familiar and welcoming presence on Moss Street.

With retirement now beckoning, Mr Macfarlane said he is looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren, enjoying holidays, cycling and playing more golf.

The closure marks the end of an era for Paisley’s town centre, with Harvies Tobacconists remembered fondly by generations of customers.
