Mail deliveries to several streets in Bishopton have been suspended after a postie was assaulted while carrying out his rounds.
Royal Mail confirmed it has stopped delivering to a cluster of addresses in the village following the incident on Carrick Road on Wednesday, February 25.
Police Scotland has launched an investigation.
For now, residents in Carrick Road, Craighead Road, Almond Drive, Cawdor Crescent, Morar Crescent, Yarrow Crescent, Teviot Drive and Ettrick Drive will need to collect their mail from the Erskine Delivery Office in Rashielee Avenue.
A letter sent to households in the affected streets described a “serious incident of abuse” directed at a member of Royal Mail staff.
Because of the incident, the company says the risk to workers delivering in the area is now considered “unacceptably high”, citing the threat of further abuse.
In the letter, a customer operations manager wrote:
“Royal Mail will be working with the police and as part of that we will consider what needs to be done to ensure we can safely resume deliveries to your addresses as soon as possible.”
It added that the step had been taken to safeguard staff.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said:
“The wellbeing of our colleagues is our highest priority and we will take the necessary steps to ensure their safety at work.”
Residents who cannot get to the delivery office have been advised to contact Royal Mail to arrange alternative delivery options until normal service resumes.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed enquiries are ongoing following the report of a man being assaulted on Carrick Road.
For now, the message to residents is simple: if you’re expecting post, you’ll need to collect it from Erskine until deliveries can safely resume.
