Part of Renfrewshire came to a standstill this morning as roads across Paisley, Ferguslie Park, Elderslie and Johnstone were closed for a half marathon organised by Future Sports Events.
For many residents, there appeared to be little or no notice given, leaving people blocked into their streets with no clear way out. Some drivers reported being able to move only a street or two before being forced to turn back, drive in circles, or return to where they started.
In Ferguslie Park, one pensioner walking from the privies to ASDA was stopped in his tracks at Barskiven Road and prevented from reaching the shop to do his weekly groceries.
Meanwhile in Elderslie, one nurse was unable to make her way to work due to road closures. She was forced to call in and take the day off, losing a day’s wages and leaving colleagues short-staffed.
Questions are now being asked about whether the disruption caused was worth it for the 970 runners taking part.
Local businesses also felt the impact, with some restaurants reporting lost bookings due to customers being unable to reach them.
Renfrewshire is home to several large parks, running tracks, and open spaces such as the Gleniffer Braes. Some residents have suggested that events like this could be held in those locations instead, allowing runners to take part without causing widespread disruption to communities or affecting emergency service routes.
