Brown Institute Demolition

In the heart of Renfrew stands a testament to the town’s rich history the Brown Institute on Canal Street. Originally gifted to the town by Provost Andrew Brown, this iconic building has served various purposes over the years, from its start being a library and reading room to a museum. However, recent years have seen its decline, raising fears among residents that demolition may be the only option left.

Built in 1903 after plans were drawn up by architect Alexander McGibbon and assistant architect William Barclay the Brown Institute holds a special place in the hearts of Renfrew’s residents. Named after the Brown family, who played a significant role in managing William Simons’ shipyard, the institute has been a focal point of community life for over a century. Its grand architecture, including a panelled billiard room and crenelated facade, once symbolised the town’s prosperity and cultural heritage.

Despite efforts by Renfrewshire Council to market the property, the Brown Institute has languished in neglect since the museum’s relocation in 2011. A notable crack in its facade, first spotted in 2011, with a now much larger visible crack on the side gable wall in 2024 some 30-40ft in length from top to bottom of the building which has worsened over the years, leading to structural issues that now pose a risk to public safety. Following a recent survey, demolition has been recommended as the most viable solution.

The news of the institute’s potential demolition has sparked concern among residents. While recognising the need for public safety, many are saddened by the proposed loss of this historic landmark. Efforts to explore alternative options, including potential uses for the site post-demolition, are still underway. However, the fate of the Brown Institute seems certain for demolition, leaving the community grappling with the proposed loss of a cherished piece of their heritage.

As Renfrew undoubtedly prepares to bid farewell to the Brown Institute, questions linger about what will take its place. While discussions about landscaping the area for public use offer a glimmer of hope, the void left by the institute’s absence will undoubtedly be felt. Yet, amidst the uncertainty, there is an opportunity to honour its legacy and ensure that its spirit lives on in the fabric of the community.
