Jack of Spades

Joel Coen Heads to Scotland With Josh O’Connor for Jack of Spades

Joel Coen is back behind the camera — this time in Scotland — with Jack of Spades, his first film since 2021’s The Tragedy of Macbeth. While details of the project are still being kept tightly under wraps, we do know one thing: Josh O’Connor will take the lead role.

For Coen, this marks just his second solo outing without longtime collaborator and brother Ethan, making the project one of the most closely watched films currently in development.

It also continues a remarkable run for O’Connor, who has been steadily carving out a path with some of the most respected filmmakers working today. After his breakout in God’s Own Country and acclaimed turn in The Crown, he’s now lining up collaborations with top-tier American directors — with Coen’s Jack of Spades set to be another jewel in that growing list.

With Scotland as the backdrop, anticipation is already building for what promises to be a dark, distinctive entry in Coen’s filmography.
