Discover Paisley’s “Walk of Fame”: Celebrating the Icons Behind the Paisley Pattern

Who else better to plan your route out than myself ! so off I started at 1pm today and seven hours later I’ve walked the route took all the pictures and devised what I think is the best way to walk the route ( including a stop off at Castelvecchi for fish n chips )

Paisley, a town rich in history and culture, is globally renowned for its iconic Paisley pattern. This intricate design, symbolising a blend of heritage and innovation, it owes its Paisley patterned heartbeat to numerous individuals who have contributed significantly to its legacy. Embark on an active travel walk around Paisley’s “Walk of Fame” to explore the stories of these remarkable people who have shaped and nurtured the town’s famous pattern.

Stop 1. David Tennant – Paisley Grammar School, Glasgow Road

Picked this as the starting point as it was about the furthest stone out. Leaving here you head in the direction of Paisley town centre till you get to Cotton Street where you take a left into Cotton Street and just before the White Cart Water at Bridge Street you find stop 2.

Stop 2. Mill Girls – Looking over the old Mills, Bridge Street

Stoping here to take in what it must have been like to work in the world famous Paisley mills whilst admiring the White cart water and views of Paisley Abbey and Town hall before heading in the direction of Orchard Street and turning left to Causeyside street to stop 3. and look down on the way you will see reference to mill workers jobs set into the stone on the ground

Stop 3. Phyllis Logan – Phelps the Butcher, Causeyside Street

At Causeyside Street you will take in the splendour of some of Paisley’s buildings, music and St Mirren football fans will want to cross the road at this point and go down Browns Lane to Shuttle Street STOP 4 … check out the Murals on the way !! 😉 ( this is a cobbled street which may be unsuitable, for those not to steady on there feet or using wheelchairs etc ) if you are unable to go this route go to New Street then Shuttle Street to find stop 4.

Stop 4. Gerry Rafferty – Bungalow Bar, Shuttle Street

Shuttle Street is filled with restaurants and bars .. Music fans check to the history of the Bungalow bar. From here head into Witherspoon Street and to the bottom of Storie Street where you will find Stop 5.

Stop 5. Norrie Sweeney – Beside where his Boxing Gym once stood, Storie Street

For 50 years Norrie Sweeney turned the unprofessionals into professional boxers, it all started when Norrie won £1000 and spent it on a second hand Boxing ring which is still used to this day. walk back down Witherspoon Street in the direction of Paisley Arts Centre and to its left you will find step 6.

Stop 6. Tom Conti – Paisley Arts Centre, New Street

Paisley Arts centre, just reopened in 2024 after a multi million pond upgrade check to what shows are on when you are here. walking up New street and I got food in my belly and a license for my telly
And nothing’s gonna bring me down …. yes it’s food stop and can I highly recommend the Fish teas at Castelvecchi where you find Paolo’s parents chip shop with the Paolo stone set in the pavement outside the shop at Stop 7

Stop 7. Paolo Nutini – Castelvecchi, New Street

” My devotion to Paolo, as a fan from New York, peaked my interest in Paisley. To see him honored this way makes me very proud of his creativity and generosity towards his hometown. Elise Diakoniarakis ( New York ) ” After a food stop its to the top of the hill and turn right onto the High Street to find Stop 8.

Stop 8. John Byrne – Library Paisley, High Street

Paisley Library ( walk in its free, and go on the lifts to the top to view the landscape of paisley from the windows on each level ) back out the building turning left walk down just past the Cenotaph and turn left into Gilmour Street at the tree area halfway down the street on the right is stop 9.

Stop 9. Fulton MacKay – Beside Train Station, Gilmour Street

Gilmour Street taking in the buildings and you will see Gilmour Street train station to its left was once a post office its now a public house. looking from here to the train station yo will see a bridge this takes you to your final stop, and at stop 10 you will find.

Stop 10. Gerard Butler – The Exchange, Old Sneddon Street

Well CONGRATULATIONS if you made it to stop 10.
