Thoughts On One Way System For Westend

A map was shown last night to the PWCCC Paisley West and Central Community Council by a member of the Oakshaw residents association on a idea for a one-way system in the Westend of Paisley.

The reason for the idea was that there was too much congestion in Wellmeadow due to the Starlight Theatre Company, Rocknrollas and Coats venue all operating within such a short distance of each other, it was also stated that the road could be victorian or medieval but they were not quite sure !.

The plan which is in its early infancy and has been sent out to numerous organisations, roads dept etc for there early thoughts involves a no right turn as you go up Well street and a one way system in operation from top of Well Street along Wellmeadow Street to Lady Lane then right into George Street and all the way up to Castle Street back into Wellmeadow.

The idea also comes as more parking spaces will soon be lost as the new Museum development allowed for spaces to be lost outside the former Territorial Army Hall in the High Street to allow for buses parking.

Whats your thoughts on the idea of a Westend one way system ? Post your comments on here or of the Facebook Page alternatively if you wish privacy and wish them posted for you you can message the page or e-mail them in to eventphotos@btinternet.com

There could well be implications for businesses as well as a downturn in passing trade for the few businesses who have survived a massive downturn in trade within the area as well as implications for emergency services who could be delayed further and as we all know vital seconds can help save lives.

  1. The parking at the corner of Castle Street and George Street needs to be addressed whether this scheme proceeds or not it has been a problem for years, cars parked too close to the corner make taking the sweeping bend very dangerous. Council painted parking spaces actually allow it to happen, it should be double yellow lines.

    1. So if for example I want to get to the hippy chippy from Well St a journey of about 100 yards I will have to drive about a mile. Good sound environmentally friendly idea 🤡

  2. Another bad idea, following on from the causeyside st disaster. Saying it’s to reduce congestion on wellmeadow, would this not just increase the volume of traffic, also lady lane is not an ideal street to use especially if there is a funeral party gathering at the parlour.
Time to go back to the drawing board..again

    1. Paisley is one the least car friendly places in Scotland. Traffic management plans are not thought through. It seems there are plans beyond putting countless traffic lights at pinch points across the town. The pedestrianisation of the High Street was the start of a downward spiral. Parking is limited and parking enforcement appears to be limited to drivers that have responsibly parked, but have run over the duration of their parking tariff, rather than dealing with numerous illegal and irresponsible parking that blights just about every road. I can’t see how this proposal will do much other than change the dynamic, but doing little to mitigate congestion and emissions.

  3. Sort the double parking on Wellmeadow street to Lady Lane. Buses and indeed emergency vehicles struggle to get past. Thats a disaster waiting to happen with selfish drivers. Another one way system is the final nail in the coffin for Paisley. Havent the planners learned from that?

  4. George street is horrendous as it is just now. The speed people travel up n down the road is unbelievable. We need speed bumps. To add more traffic to the area would make it much worse.
It is going to take an accident before anything is done.

Should we not wait until whatever buildings in well street are knocked down before decisions are made ???

  6. When is this congestion problem? I drive there about 8.30 am on weekdays and only ever get stopped for a few seconds to let a car past if a bus is stopped and when I go home at night anytime from 5-6pm its the same
