M8 Was Closed Earlier After Car Plunges Onto Motorway at Paisley

The M8 westbound was closed at Junction 27, the White Cart Viaduct in Paisley, following a serious one-car crash reported at around 8.40pm on Thursday, 16 July, 2026.

Emergency services remain at the scene, while Renfrew Road has also been closed between the Abbotsinch Retail Park roundabout and the Arkleston Road roundabout due to significant damage to roadside barriers caused during the incident.

Two women have been taken to hospital for treatment. Their conditions are not known at this stage.

From the scene, it appears the vehicle left the slip road at Junction 27 as it was heading towards Paisley before crossing all four lanes of traffic on Renfrew Road. The car then smashed through the safety barrier and came to rest on the westbound carriageway of the M8 below.

Police Scotland and other emergency services are carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area, as significant delays are expected while the road closures remain in place. Drivers should seek alternative routes where possible.

We’ll provide further updates as more information becomes available.
