A cyclist was stopped by Road Policing officers after being spotted riding along the M8 motorway in Glasgow on Tuesday, 28 July 2026.

Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit shared details of the incident on social media, reminding the public that cyclists and pedestrians are prohibited from using motorways due to the serious dangers involved.

Officers highlighted that cyclists and pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users, and entering a motorway places not only themselves at significant risk but also other motorists travelling at high speeds.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “For the avoidance of doubt, cyclists and pedestrians are not allowed on the motorway. For their own safety, misuse of the motorway presents a significant risk to all.”

Motorways are designed exclusively for motor vehicles travelling at higher speeds, with no facilities for pedestrians or cyclists. Anyone needing to cross or travel near a motorway should instead use designated footpaths, bridges or alternative routes.

Police are urging all road users to familiarise themselves with the rules of the road and to help keep Scotland’s motorways safe for everyone.
