Ethel Caterham is celebrating an extraordinary milestone as she turns 117. Guinness World Records recognizes the Surrey, England, resident as both the oldest living person and the oldest living woman in the world.
Born in the United Kingdom on August 21, 1909, Ethel has witnessed more than a century of history. Even at 117, she continues to enjoy new experiences. During the past year, she stroked a llama for the first time and held hands with King Charles III. When they met, she recalled watching his 1969 investiture as Prince of Wales.
Ethel thanked everyone who sent birthday wishes and celebrated privately with family and friends. She said she remains excited to discover what another year may bring.
The seventh of eight siblings, Ethel had a sister who reached 104. She worked as a nanny and later operated a nursery. She outlived her husband, Norman, who passed away in 1976, and their daughters, Gem and Anne. Today, her family legacy continues through three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her simple advice for a long life is to avoid arguments, listen to others and continue doing what brings her happiness
