Safety concerns have been raised at Hamilton Court in Paisley, prompting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and Renfrewshire Council to take action. Residents have been urged to remove combustible items from communal areas to ensure the safety of everyone living in the high-rise flats. This call for action comes after a recent visit from the SFRS, which highlighted the potential fire hazards posed by the presence of items like furniture, mobility scooters, plants, pictures, rugs, and ornaments in the building’s hallways and landings.
Residents of Hamilton Court will soon receive letters from Renfrewshire Council, drawing attention to the abundance of these potentially hazardous items on the landings. These objects have been identified as fire risks, and residents will be asked to relocate them to safer areas within their apartments. The aim is to minimise the potential for fires and improve the overall safety of the building.
To address this issue promptly, residents will have a four-week window to remove the identified items. During this period, the council will work with residents to facilitate the safe relocation of these items. The intention is not only to safeguard the residents but also to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.
In the event that residents do not take action within the stipulated time frame, Renfrewshire Council will step in. The council plans to remove these items from the communal areas and place them in storage for approximately six months. This temporary removal aims to eliminate immediate fire hazards while allowing residents to retrieve their belongings if they comply with safety guidelines.
Ironically, it was just a year ago when Hamilton Court narrowly avoided a potential disaster when a car crashed into the high-rise, narrowly missing a gas main. This recent safety concern emphasizes the importance of maintaining a safe environment within the building. Blocking hallways and landings with combustible items only increases the risk of fires and endangers the lives of residents.
Safety should always be a top priority, especially in high-rise buildings like Hamilton Court. The proactive measures taken by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Renfrewshire Council serve as a reminder of the critical importance of fire safety. By removing combustible items from communal areas, residents can help prevent potential disasters and ensure the well-being of everyone living in the building. Let us learn from past incidents and prioritize safety to protect our community and property.
