It has now been a little over four weeks since an accident on Wellmeadow Street, yet concerns over the ongoing parking and traffic situation remain unresolved.
If anything, the situation appears to have got worse, with buses and cars regularly finding themselves blocked between Lady Lane and Wellmeadow Street.
At busy times, drivers can be left facing a frustrating “fastest foot on the pedal gets through” mentality as vehicles attempt to squeeze through the restricted section of road.
A significant part of the concern appears to be linked to parking associated with Paisley Central Mosque, 22 Wellmeadow Street, particularly at busy worship times. The mosque’s own website states that around 200 worshippers attend each of its 341 services per month.
The sheer number of people attending services inevitably creates additional demand for parking in the surrounding streets, and residents and road users are concerned that this is contributing significantly to the current situation.
The issue is not about worship or the mosque itself — it is about traffic management, parking and road safety.
With vehicles parked along the road, buses and other traffic can be forced into increasingly difficult situations as they attempt to pass one another.
It has now been more than four weeks since the previous accident, and residents and road users are asking why more hasn’t been done to address the situation.
Nobody wants to be in the position of saying “I told you so” after another serious incident — or worse, after somebody is killed or seriously injured.
The hope is that the relevant authorities will take action before another accident happens, rather than waiting for a more serious incident to force the issue.
This is about preventing an accident, not waiting for one to happen.
