Set against the backdrop of 1960s Paisley, this inventive St Mirren-inspired translation breathed fresh life into one of the world’s most beloved operas. Swapping the heat of Spain for the bustle of the town’s thread mills, dance halls and football terraces proved a masterstroke, giving the story a gritty local energy that resonated from the opening notes to the dramatic finale.

The production brilliantly captured the humour, passion and spirit of Paisley itself. The clever translation by Lindsay Bramley felt authentic and vibrant, filled with familiar references that delighted audiences while still preserving the emotional power of Bizet’s masterpiece.

Under the baton of Alistair Digges, the Orchestra of Scottish Opera delivered a rich and stirring performance, while director Simon Hannigan expertly balanced spectacle with heartfelt storytelling.

One of the production’s greatest strengths was its community spirit. From the talented primary school pupils to right2dance and Paisley Opera’s dedicated community chorus, every performer brought warmth, enthusiasm and authenticity to the stage. The professional cast shone throughout, delivering powerhouse vocals and emotionally charged performances that drew thunderous applause.

As the curtain fell, the audience rose to its feet in a well-deserved standing ovation, with cheers echoing throughout the Tannahill Centre in appreciation of a truly remarkable production.

This was far more than an opera — it was a love letter to Paisley. Ambitious, entertaining and deeply rooted in local identity, Carmen proved that world-class productions can flourish when communities come together with imagination and passion. Audiences left the Tannahill Centre buzzing, having witnessed a truly unforgettable night of theatre.
